Visual artists make innumerable working decisions that aren’t purely conceptual or only to do with materials and techniques but lie somewhere in between. What kinds of visual intelligence are at work in the concrete, particular ways in which visual artists think and make? Do viewers need similar processes of perception and thought in order to understand and evaluate works of art? To what extent if any is it possible to generalize about these processes, and what are the implications for art education?
